The Economics of the Gig Economy

Platforms match workers to short tasks. Flexibility comes with trade-offs in security and benefits.

The gig economy includes ride-hailing, food delivery, freelance platforms, and short-term task work.

It has grown rapidly with smartphones and digital platforms.

I How it works

Platforms connect customers with workers for individual jobs. Workers are often classified as independent contractors rather than employees.

II Benefits

  • — Flexible hours
  • — Low barriers to entry
  • — Supplemental income
  • — Convenience and lower prices for customers

III Concerns

Workers may lack sick pay, holiday pay, pensions, and job security. Earnings can be unpredictable after costs such as fuel and vehicle wear. Courts and regulators in various countries have examined whether some gig workers should be classed as employees.

IV Economic debates

Economists debate whether gig work mainly adds new opportunities or replaces more secure jobs, and how to adapt social protections to flexible work.

V How earnings are calculated

Gig workers are often paid per task rather than per hour. Headline pay can look reasonable, but true earnings depend on waiting time between jobs, travel distance, fuel or vehicle costs, platform commissions, and taxes. Some studies of ride-hailing drivers have found hourly earnings after expenses vary widely. Workers who track their actual costs and hours get a clearer picture of whether the work pays.
